Not only do our IRTG doctoral researchers go to Nagoya, Japan for a longer research stay, but the doctoral researchers from our partner institution Nagoya Institute of Technology are visiting us at FAU. Two of them are reporting from their time at FAU:

Ryota Yamamoto from Project B stayed at FAU two times within his doctorate, from May to October in 2022 and since March 2023 up until this month. When he visited the laboratory in Germany, the first thing that surprised him was the clean, organized research environment, which allowed me to concentrate on what I needed to do efficiently. Discussions with his supervisors and colleagues of FAU were an important opportunity to improve my research and communication skills. I also enjoyed discussing cultural exchange and German typical daily-life with many colleagues at lunchtime every day. Regular meetings and events provided opportunities to express his opinions and ideas. One of the best parts of studying abroad is for him the opportunity to walk around the streets of Germany and get a feeling for the European cityscape.

The doctoral researchers at NITech participate in a seminar in preparation for research stays in Germany where they receive intensive English training, information about German culture and for living in Germany,  and risk management stretagies for overseas travel. In addition two cultural manuals, namely “How to Japan” and “How to Germany”, were created by the FAU Japanese Studies team, which were printed as small books and distributed to the FAU and NITech doctoral researchers as well as all other IGK2495 members before their stay. It contains important information on bureaucracy, living guidelines, work- and university culture, general cultural aspects, and transportation, in addition to practical information about trash disposal, tipping at restaurants, and punctuality, amongst much more.

Takahito Otsuka from Project G stayed at FAU from April till November 2023 where, within the Glass-Group at FAU, he created a new composition glass which has the possibility to be a functional glass-ceramics . Therefor, he uses the melt-quenching technique for glass-liquid. and observes the surface of a sample through the microscope. He is surveying the best treatment condition for the function of glass-ceramics.

Both joint the IRTG International symposium at the E-MRS Spring Meeting as chair of an oral session, invited speaker and for poster presentations.
