Kick-off Meeting 2026

From 9-11 March, the third and final kick-off meeting of our International Research Training Group took place. Over the course of three days, members from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and Nagoya Institute of Technology (NITech) gathered in Rothenburg ob der Tauber to exchange ideas and strengthen their collaboration. The program combined a rich schedule of presentations and lectures with opportunities to experience the cultural setting.

The meeting opened with welcoming remarks by IRTG Director, Kyle G. Webber, and Co-Director, Tomokatsu Hayakawa. A special highlight was the introduction to the program of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, delivered by Ms. Kumiko Tansho, who provided students with a comprehensive and engaging overview.

The primary aim of the kick-off meeting was to offer the new cohort of doctoral researchers—our third generation—an initial insight into the diverse research projects within the IRTG, on both the German and Japanese sides. This objective was achieved through a series of project presentations by Principal Investigators, showcasing key results and developments from the first and second generations.

Two keynote lectures further enriched the program. We were pleased to welcome Ms. Nicola Beaumont from R&D Technology and Mr. Erling Ringgaard from CTS Corporation, who shared valuable perspectives from industry.

In addition to the scientific program, doctoral researchers participated in workshops on Good Scientific Practice as well as Project Management and Leadership, equipping them with essential skills for their academic careers.

The evenings provided a more informal setting for networking and exchange, fostering deeper discussions among participants. On the first evening, the group enjoyed a guided night tour through Rothenburg ob der Tauber, exploring its iconic medieval architecture and walking along the historic town walls. On the final day, participants had the opportunity to experience a wine tasting featuring regional specialties from Rothenburg, providing a fitting cultural highlight to conclude the meeting.
